Huså fun and easy back-country skiing adventure in Åre

exploring the route to Huså, back-country skiing in Åre

If you found your way up to the very top of mount Åreskutan and looking for a back-country adventure that you can manage without a mountain guide, here is the tip.

Take aim straight north, meaning you will turn away from the sun. You will find a trail marked with a sign; “Off-pist till Huså”. You just follow that trail. The skiing can be a bit demanding at the beginning. Everyone that can manage to get up on the top can manage this, no worry. This trail leads all the way down to Huså and lake Kallsjön on the back of the mountain.

Make sure the sign is up!

Do yourself a favor. Make sure the sign on top is up before going down. It serves as your insurance, there is a ride back. Now you are at the start of a 5 kilometers long trail. It lingers down the mountainside in a total waste landscape. More advanced skiers can take to the left, leaving the trail underneath. They will be rewarded with a decent number of turns in virgin powder.

At the time you enter the tree-level, you need to gain some speed as the trail flattens out. Suddenly, you find yourself on a ski slope, this is gruvbacken, Huså’s own ski system consisting of one Poma/button lift. At the bottom of that one you will find Marlenans restaurant where you can have a drink or a taste of the local menu. Have a moment in the sun, celebrate your achievement.

Huså itself is an old mining town, a real hillbilly village at the dead end of a godforsaken gravel road. Don’t expect anything more out of this place in terms of service. To get back to the civilization on the sunny side of the mountain, you have to take a lift in a snowmobile sledge. A ski trip to Huså is a good adventure for everyone visiting Åre. I can strongly recommend you go down here at least once.
