Fleischer’s Hotel in Voss is certainly worth a visit. Being one of the icon historical hotels in Norway. Owned and managed by the same family for six generations in a row. Fleischer’s in Voss has hosted more than one king during it 160 years of service.
And now it was our turn to be guests of this establishment. The oldest part of today’s building dates back to 1889, placed door to door with the Voss train station.
Fredrik’s Bar in the lobby area, named after the hotel’s first owner.
If walls could speak
Voss is not only a ski town and a hub for international tourists visiting the nearby fjords. Voss is, or was, the first stop for Norwegians traveling from the West Coast to the eastern part of the country.
To serve those travelers, Fredrik Fleischer started his hotel back in 1864. Since then, Kings and queens have stayed here regularly. When Bergensbanen (railroad connecting Bergen with Oslo) was established in 1883, Fredrik decided to build a new hotel right at the train station
Such a long history sets its marks on the hotel building, no doubt. The main building is dated back to 1889 and looks the same today. Expansions have been made throughout the years in all directions. Luckily, the old charm is kept. And wherever you sit you can sense the shadows of nobles visited this place before you.
Fleischer’s aging with grace
As you can understand, everything isn’t brand new here and that’s also the reason you want to stay here, to take part of the history. For example, there is a pool area, it serves its purpose, but it’s not all up to date. Still, it’s nice to relax in the pool after a day of skiing. (Fleischer’s is the only hotel i Voss with an indoor pool).
The hotel kitchen and breakfast buffet are almost brand new. It was reconstructed after a fire destroyed the old kitchen in 2008. Serving guests for more than 160 years, Fleischer’s knows how a real breakfast buffet is to be served. So don’t forget to take your time at the breakfast table.
This is a classic half – board hotel and I suggest that you book dinner at the same time as you reserve the room. Otherwise, you will be referred to their bar menu and pizza.
The new refurbished Seckman room brings back the glory days. The main course of the day was a classic lamb, a tasty Voss specialty.
Charming hotel rooms
The hotel rooms come in different categories, but all have their historical charm left. In our room, we slept like royals. Bathrooms are renovated on a scheme ten pro year. Which means all of them are more or less up-to-date. Check the hotel’s own pictures here
Bar and common areas
This is where this building charms you the most. You don’t want to be sitting in the hotel room anyway. Take your place, soak in the atmosphere. Relax, enjoy.
The location on the platform, next to the train station and Voss Gondol ads to the feeling that you are in the center of where things take place. Staying here makes you feel like a time traveler and a globetrotter at the same time. Who is the next person to enter the swinging doors? Is it a king, a skier or Phileas Fogg?
